The Philippines has a lot going for it.
Contrary to the "gloom and doom" portrayal of the country by the international news community, the Philippines in general is actually a safe place. There are more dangerous places in other, first-world countries in the world. On top of that, the large majority of the population speak good English, much better than the rest of Asia, making it one of the more "tourist-friendly" countries in the region.
In fact, there are a lot of expats that have fallen in-love with the country and made it their home.
The Economy
The economic future of the country is promising indeed, as stated by HSBC's forecast:
"The Philippines is the 44th-largest economy in the world today, according to HSBC estimates. But if current trends hold, it can leap to the No. 16 spot by 2050. The Philippine stock market, one of the best performers in the region."
